Although crimes alleged to have been committed by juveniles are often the same as those alleged to have been committed by adults, the juvenile system functions differently than the adult criminal justice system. The juvenile system is geared more toward rehabilitation rather than punishment. Although most juveniles (under 18 years of age) are prosecuted through the juvenile system, there is a growing trend to file charges and prosecute juvenile cases in adult court.
